About LES BOTTES ROUGES
Before becoming a winemaker, Jean-Baptiste Menigoz was a teacher working with special needs children. During this time, he became interested in natural winemaking, no doubt influenced by his good friend and fellow winemaker, Raphael Monnier of Domaine Ratapoil. After finishing an apprenticeship with Stéphane Tissot, he decided to bite the bullet and commit fully to beccoming a winemaker. Meaning “the red boots” in French, Jean-Baptiste initially started the estate with his wife.

In 2014, he was joined by Florien Kleine Snuverink. A long-time proponent of natural wines, Florien used to own the famed Café Schiller in Amsterdam before moving to the Jura to learn winemaking. After interning for a couple of years with Yvon Métras, she toyed with the idea of purchasing vines of her own before ultimately deciding to become a partner at the estate with Jean-Baptiste.

Jean-Baptiste and Florien have vineyards in both Arbois and Abergement, which are quite possibly the closest vineyards in the Côtes de Jura AOC to Arbois. Having started out with 2.5 hectares, the estate has grown steadily and currently comprises of 7 different parcels of vines totaling 7 hectares in total. They are in the process of adding another 2 parcels. The soils in their parcels encompass limestone, heavy clay and marl. Strict organic principles are applied with the occasional experiment on biodynamic treatments made depending on each parcel’s individual needs. Jean-Baptiste and Florien make a wide range of wines, all with native yeasts and without fining and no filtration. Wines they like to drink themselves, Jean-Baptiste says.
